Laura Murdoch – London Transport Museum

Since joining us in 2018 , Tom has made a real positive impression at the Museum. His confidence and extrovert personality means that he’s really fitted in, and Tom has taken every opportunity to get stuck in at the Museum. His love of transport shines through, so much that during lockdown he took the time to give us a virtual zoom tour of his own miniature railway!

His personality means he makes connections easily. Tom is always keen to get to know his volunteer and staff colleagues, and has attended almost every social gathering! Early last year Tom made the trip to London to join a volunteer social where we explored a historic house, Tom hadn’t met many of the other volunteers before but quickly made friends and joined a group to get to know them more over lunch.

His ability to make connection has been a real asset for the Museum. Tom’s role as Welcome Host means that he engages with hundreds of people every day, welcoming them to the Museum. Tom is often the first person visitors see when they enter the Museum; he is always smiling, and makes them feel welcome every time they enter the front door. His co-workers always enjoy spending time with him whilst on duty and during breaks, and look forward to the days he’s volunteering.

Tom makes a real difference, he brings a new perspective and a fresh way of working, including helping the Museum to support volunteers with disabilities.

We are incredibly lucky to be able to say Tom volunteers for London Transport Museum. The Museum wouldn’t be the same without him!
