Working at The London Transport Museum

I have been fortunate enough to be offered a voluntary role at The London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. My journey began by simply picking up a volunteer leaflet whilst visiting their shop, and then enquiring further. This experience has completely transformed my life, and my confidence and learning skills have grown tremendously.

My main ‘Buddy’ is called Bill, and we have many laughs together and get up to mischief! All the other volunteers and staff have been so welcoming, friendly and supportive, and I feel like part of a new family. I meet and great the public, hand out leaflets, check tickets, and am now able to work independently. Many people stop and talk to me which is lovely, and I managed to get a hug from a bunch of french students when I said ‘Bonjour’ to them. They were so impressed by my intellect, little did they know it is the only french word I know!!!

  1. Good morning Tom. You may not remember us but I am Brigid of ‘Andy, Brigid and Victoria’ and we met on the Harz steam trains about 20 years ago – maybe even longer. I was with Victoria whilst Andy was hanging out the window and your mum was with you and possibly your little sister whilst your father was hanging out another window. We were about the only people on the train in winter so your mum and I started talking and your dad and Andy got on really well because of the trains. I can’t believe how old you are now and how brilliant your life looks. When we go to London we often go to the LT museum because we get free entry and a discount and the cafe is nice. Next time we’re there we’ll look out for you.

    1. Hi Brigid. I remember you all very well and lovely to hear from you. I am next at the museum from 4th – 7th Feb. I was born in 1997 and Katie in 2002 if that helps at all date wise?!. I really enjoyed my trips to the Harz. I hope you can come and see my garden railway some day in Norfolk. It would be so good to meet up again. Keep in touch.
